I struggled with this prompt, for I do not do much that is fun in my day to day life. Expressive, sure. Pleasurable, yes. Fun? … It’s as if I left that behind in order to pursue a vague ideal of being a responsible adult. Whether I’m being effective at that goal, or if it is even worthwhile, remains to be seen. For the sake of this post, I’ll let that direction go and instead see where focusing on fun things leads me.

1. Rollerblading: I’ve committed to rollerblading once a week, and I’m happy with it being a regularly scheduled activity because I might not go if I leave it to my spontaneous feelings. I have a fun time whenever I go.

2. Listening to/singing with music: I’d lump this into the categories of expressive and pleasurable moreso than fun. Therapeutic even. Like I said, this post is hard for me.

3. Playing board or video games with people: I’ve enjoyed playing these kind of games in the past, but I rarely do these days. I have not looked for a group to play board games with, and I have no means to play video games online. Rarely, I scratch this itch with old video games by myself or go to an arcade.

4. Playing pickleball: It’s engaging, and I’ve played several times with family and people I met at the Buddhist monastery I go to. If I stop being so uptight about what constitutes fun for me, then, yes, this is fun.

5. Watch TV or Netflix: I label this as a distraction, so I’ll watch stuff and simultaneously have in the back of my mind the thought that it is not something I should encourage myself to continue doing. Instead of watching crafted simulations and imaginations of life, I wish I would go out and actually live my life.

So, I have a list that has some fun stuff, and most of it is with other people. So, if I were to focus more on fun in my life, it necessarily moves me in the direction of bringing more friends into my daily life. Hey, that sounds like a good starting place.
