Long Time Coming

Tell us about the last thing you got excited about.

So, there I was. A place I had never been before, surrounded by people I had no acquaintance with, and a small wish placing me firmly in a seat next to the foosball table. You see, I had not played foosball in nearly two decades, and I distinctly recall late into my elementary school days greatly enjoying it. I had the opportunity to play quite often back then.

Eyes fixed on a TV in the corner of the room, I waited. Every now and then, I’d glance around the room, assessing the likelihood of anybody bringing my wish to life. Some were at this establishment to talk, most to play other games; it’s not my style to go around bugging everybody until somebody acquiesces, so I accepted the no’s without overt rejection. Like King Bumi, doing nothing was my strategy.

Ultimately, a group of guys decided to sit at the table behind me. I asked, and one said yes! Complete with surprises, laughs, skill shots, and the crucial rule of no spinning, the game aroused within me a quality of excitement that was so precious… so sincere and rare, it felt like that movie scene when the grim food critic dines on Remy’s ratatouille… What a gift.
